The Kreutzer Sonata (Kreutzerova sonáta) (PG)
Czechoslovakia 1927 Dir. Gustav Machatý 95 min.

Pavel Fajt

Czech musician, composer, drummer and percussionist, has been a leading figure on the Czech music scene, crossing the boundaries of rock, jazz and ethnic music while developing his own unique style and sound. He has performed with such alternative-music icons as violin prodigy Iva Bittova, American percussionist Jim Meneses, Fred Frith, Tom Cora, Stepanida Borisova and others.

In his solo performances for percussion and invented instruments he creates music out of repeated rhythms and percussive beats.

Peter Graham

A rare opportunity to hear Peter Graham, Czech musician and composer, to perform live music at the occassion of the UK premiere of Gustav Machaty’s The Kreutzer Sonata.

Peter Graham came first to Barbican in November 1989 when his Violing Concerto was performed there by the English Chamber Orchestra. It was  thanks to composer David Matthews who has discovered his music in the late 80’s and introduced it to the United Kingdom.

Graham‘s music presents a diversity of musical means, reflecting a wide range of influences from ancient and early music via jazz to everyday sounds. It is, however, usually transformative. Like Erik Satie, Graham is always prepared to start from scratch.

Publishing widely on contemporary music, Graham used to work also as a program director of the festival Exposition of New Music in Brno. He currently teaches composition at Janacek Academy of Music in Brno.
