Why learn Czech with the Czech Centre?

 

·          We organise courses for all levels – beginners, intermediate and advanced

·          Lessons are tutored by fully qualified, experienced native speakers

·          Our lecturer will asses the level of your communicative skills and suggests the right course level for you

About the Courses

 

·          Courses are divided into Beginners, Lower Intermediate, Upper Intermediate and Advance Courses

·          Each course consists of three terms starting in September, January and April

·          Each term consists of either 12 or 10 two-hours lessons

·          All classes are held once a week on a weekday Monday – Thursday from 6.30 to 8.30pm

·          Average number of students per group is 8 with a maximum of 15 students

·          Course materials: Communicative Czech, New Czech Step by Step. Our teachers use additional materials according to the actual needs of students.

·          The aim is to teach students effective communication in Czech in everyday situations and involve in communication all participants

Levels

 

Beginners Course

This is the course for complete beginners with no previous knowledge of the language or its grammatical structure. It serves as an introduction to the language and covers basic survival skills. By the end of the course (3rd term) students will be able to communicate in a number of practical everyday situations.

 

Lower Intermediate

For students who have some knowledge and practice of the language and wish to extend their range of basic skills. By the end of the course students will be able to communicate on many everyday matters related to the life and culture of the country.

 

Upper Intermediate

For students who have a good basic knowledge of the language. By the end of the course students will be able to converse reasonably fluently with native speakers and discuss personal, social and current issues, using appropriate grammatical structures.

 

Advanced Course

For those with a good command of the language and its main grammatical structures who wish to hone their conversational skills and perfect their grammar.

Course outline

 

Czech Beginners

 

Course book: Communicative Czech Elementary Czech by Ivana Bednarova – Magdalena Pintarova

 

Czech Beginners 1a

Level: Complete beginners; no previous knowledge required

Chapters: 1 –3

Topics: Introduction to the language: Who am I? introductions,  my family, shopping.

Grammar: Pronunciation: Czech sounds and the Czech alphabet; greetings and basic phrases; genders – nouns, adjectives; to be; possessive pronouns; present tense; accusative singular; nominative and accusative plural; numbers, days, months, colours.

Now you know: how to count and spell; exchange greetings; talk about yourself and your family;buy food over the counter.

 

Czech Beginners Ib

Level: Students should have completed the previous course Beginners 1a or have an equivalent knowledge (to be able to construct simple sentences using the present tense of verbs and the accusative case)

Chapters: 3 –5

Topics: Shopping, at the post office,  , bank, hotel and restaurant; likes and dislikes; directions.

Grammar: Indefinite and negative pronouns and adverbs; questions Kde? Kam?; modal verbs; vocative case; adverbs denoting quantity; introduction to the past tense.

Now you can: get by with shopping; use the post office, bank and telephone; order food and drinks in a restaurant; book a room in a hotel; express likes and dislikes; give directions.

 

Czech Beginners 1c

Level: Students should have completed the previous courses Beginners 1a and 1b or have an equivalent knowledge (to be able to speak about themselves and their families and get by in everyday situations in shops and restaurants using simple grammatical constructions.)

Chapters: 6 – 7

Topics: Daily activities; invitations; cinema & television; family; my house.

Grammar: Past tense;genitive singular & plural;ordinal numerals; dates & months; telling the time; nominative plural Ma; time questions

Now you know: how to say what you did yesterday, last week, etc.; describe daily routine; tell the time.

Czech Lower Intermediate

 

Course book: Communicative Czech Elementary Czech by Ivana Bednarova – Magdalena Pintarova

 

Czech Lower Intermediate 1a

Level: Students should have completed the full Beginners course (3 terms) or have an equivalent knowledge (approximately 60 hours of teaching/learning) and be able to communicate in everyday situations.

Chapters: 8 – 9

Topics: Travelling, weather

Grammar: Verbs of motion; pronouns každý, žádný, všichni; future tense; locative singular

Now you know: how to talk about weather and about things which are going to, happen; say where things are  and distinguish between various verbs of motion.

 

Czech lower Intermediate 1b

Level: Students should have completed Lower Intermediate 1a or have an equivalent knowledge. For more detailed information and assessment please contact the Czech Centre.

Chapters: 9 – 10

Topics: Seasons of the year; shopping for clothes

Grammar: Perfective and imperfective verbs, dative singular, imperative now you know how to talk using the past, present and future tenses using the appropriate verbs; describe seasons of the year and related activities.

 

Czech Lower Intermediate 1c

Level: Students should have completed Lower Intermediate 1b or have an equivalent knowledge. For more detailed information and assessment please contact the Czech Centre.

Chapters: 11 – 12

Topics: a new job, CV, services, parts of the body

Grammar: Instrumental singular, revision

Now you know all seven cases, you can talk about your body, get by at the doctor’s and apply for a job.

Czech Upper Intermediate 1

 

Course book: Communicative Czech Intermediate Czech by Ivana Bednarova and Magdalena Pintarova

 

Czech Upper Intermediate 1a
Level: Students should have completed the course textbook Communicative Czech Elementary Czech or have an equivalent knowledge of all three tenses and seven cases. For more detailed information and assessment please contact the Czech Centre.

Chapters: 1 – 2

Topics: Changes, hobbies

Grammar: Irregular comparatives and superlatives of adjectives and adverbs; conditional; conditional clauses with kdyby.

 

Czech Upper Intermediate 1b

Chapters: 3 – 4

Topics: Health, travelling,

Grammar: Dative and locative plural; relative clauses with the pronoun ktery; declensions of nouns like turista nad pruvodce;

 

Czech Upper Intermediate 1c

Chapters: 5 - 6

Topics: Prague, description and characteristics

Grammar: Instrumental plural; declension of numbers; regular comparatives and superlatives of adjectives and adverbs; possessive adjectives; declension of nouns of foreign origin.

Czech Upper Intermediate 2a

Chapters: 7 – 8

Topics: Life style; description of the country; Europe

Grammar: Reflexive passive forms; declension of nouns like dítě and kuře; conjunctions and link words; time clauses; conditional clauses.clauses with aby; compound passive forms; verbal nouns; sentence transformations; revision

 

Czech Advanced

Course material to be brought in by the teacher.

Level: For students who have completed all previous course or have equivalent knowledge and conversational skills.

The focus of this course is to improve on existing knowledge and conversational skills. Themes and topics to reflect students‘ needs. Individual course programme.

You can register either in person at the Czech Centre’s reception or by completing the enrolment  form and sending it to the Czech Centre together with full payment before the set deadline.  You can download the enrolment form here.

Terms & Conditions

These courses or courses on request will open if there is 6 or more students, in which case the cost of £160 applies and concessions of £120 are available. If there is less students the Czech Centre might consider opening the course but the price will be £180 with no concessions. You can register either in person at the Czech Centre or by completing an enrolment form and sending it to the Czech Centre, 13 Harley Street, London W1G 9QG together with full payment. Please note that to enrol we must receive your enrolment form as well as payment before the set deadline.

 

Cancellations and refunds 

Our classes are planned for a limited number of students. For this reason we regret that fees are not refundable once a course has started and that no partial refund can be granted for classes not attended. The Czech Centre cannot accept any responsibility for unforeseen changes in student’s circum-stances that may prevent attendance. Fees will be refunded if a course is cancelled or closed due to an insufficient number of students or for any other reason beyond our control.

 

Please note:

Fees are exclusive of books.

We regret that we cannot accept payment of fees by instalment.

The Czech Centre is closed on Bank Holidays. However, courses which fall on these dates will be rescheduled accordingly.

The right is reserved to refuse admission.

Students are kindly requested to refrain from smoking while on the premises.
